Seems like I’m back on a video game kick. it makes me nervous for the time suck of it all, but honestly…video games are some of my favorite works of art that I have consumed. There are things that my intuition pings as true “guilty pleasures”, like scrolling tiktok, but I never get that feeling around video games. Sometimes I’m even encourage to take a break, refresh. I know its a bit of a meme to have video game music as one of your favorite genres but genuinely…I just think there so much more creative ground to explore than there is in “radio friendly” idk what you would call it music. I will never understand, as someone who only dabbles with music, how someone can make a series of melodic and percussive sounds evoke the FEELING of a whimsical fantasy shop. Like…often in the kind of illustration I do, I am creating a very literal representation of my subject. Music is completely divorced from anything representational – it’s pure emotion. From sounds! What the fuck is this magic??? Idk. When I hear the magic crafters theme from spyro and it sounds exactly like my favorite type of goofy wizard and the world he would live in…where do you even start, when you are composing. It amazes me.
With that in mind I made a little playlist of some video game music favorites. Gw2 is there not just from personal bias – genuinely, it is world class. It’s probably that game’s biggest strength, rivaled only by the art direction. The entire base game is free so if you have any proclivity towards exploring fantasy worlds for the sake of exploring, I recommend trying it out. Just strolling through the beautifully crafted environments would be a well spent afternoon, I’d say.

A bit of a buzz kill next – it’s my favorite topic, Roblox (booooo). The whole chat/age verification thing put me over the edge. I have some videos linked in the description – I really recommend at least watching the first one. The kid started working (yes, working) as a roblox game dev FOR HIRE as a “young teen”. The production value of the video makes it obvious he’s developed incredible skills for his age, but at what cost?
This last one was a brain blast – or nonsense. I haven’t had much sleep recently. But it’s a slight twist on the Matrix idea.
