Below is a little rant I went on after figure drawing, which I realized listening back was also heavily influenced by the experience at the book store. And also, the sketches I drew. I can remember since middle school, the goal was to get away from “cartoony”. Even up through those illustrator professional development classes I took, something looking “cartoony” was a critique to fix. Realism meant less amateur, more skilled. I have found since I let my characters look cartoony, while still using the anatomy in front of me as my primary reference, my pictures just look more alive. To me any way. They also look more Robyn, whatever that means. Maybe it’s a case of knowing what advice is for you, what context was it given in. Sometimes we hold ourselves to such ancient rules, buried so deep we don’t realize they are something we can question.
I’m freestyling, marinating on a concern I’ve had – but I have not thoroughly thought through the issue. There’s a nuance to this topic that could only really be discussed properly in a …discussion. Not a monologue. Sometimes the best I can do when the feelings are bubbling over, is at least gnaw on and work through the way I see things.
